giacometta

Meet Giacometta. She’s named after the sculptor Alberto Giacometti, because really – she’s all gangly and awkward like his sculptures. She is a part of a project at school, where we’re working with dolls as the inspiration for further design. It’s like a three dimensional sketch in a way!

This image came up during our slide-show presentation, and I just fell in love with the shape of these doll-creatures. Unfortunately, I don’t know who the artist is, but if anyone does – I’ll be ready to put up some links! I do wish I knew whose work this is, I’d love to see more of it! Anyways, I sketched out a shape similar to these dolls on some muslin, stuffed her with scrap pieces of yarn, and started playing around with pieces of fabrics, clock-parts, and old lockets.

Yes, that’s an old locket that function as the doll’s eyes. It’s reminding a lot of people of little creatures in the movie “9″, and I can certainly see that. There is also some chiffon and satin silk scraps, and a small handful of clock-parts. I bought an old-ish alarm clock at a thrift-store, and after some muscle effort and pliers and safety goggles, I had a small pile of clock parts to use as decoration (Janne has a picture in one of her posts, where I’m hard at work pulling that clock apart).

The next part of the project is to scale up the design (or, be inspired by the doll-design) for a full size garment. I got myself some more clock-parts (this time I just bought them on etsy!), some black mother of pearl shells, some beads, and some yards of silk. I’m excited about the final outcome!

I’ll be back with the finished garment – and it won’t be long, since the semester is over in two weeks!

(Oh, and see that green thing in the background? I’m working on making a book – from scratch! I’m almost done with it, so more pictures are coming!)

mustard

This is the third installment in my ongoing series of favorite colors. Parts I and II were green (well, yellow-green, lime-ness), and turquoise. Looking at those two collections of color, not many of the objects are actually things to wear, to put on my body. Surveying mustard-colored things I’m surrounding myself with, I was surprised to see that they were pretty much all things to wear. In fact, I’ve even made half of them myself!

From the left: Yummy, yummy plant-dyed yarn that I picked up from the museum I worked at a couple of summers ago. I’ve been fondling it ever since (maybe mostly with my eyes), and I haven’t found a project yet that is worthy of its yummy-ness. Not to mention I only have those two skeins, so it won’t be a big project! ♦My first ever designer-piece! It’s by super-talented Abigail Glaum-Lathbury, who is based here in Chicago. I love how unexpected it is, but it still feels manageable, and just delightfully special. ♦ Mustard + corduroy + shorts = happy. ♦ Socks, socks, socks. I think I made these much more for the sake of the color, than I did for being in want of socks. ♦ My beautiful linen/wool scarf. I’ve been using this year-round for years now, and it’s bright enough to cheer up grey days, but not so bright that it seems out of place in winter. It’s from Swedish design brand Gudrun Sjödén, who I respect deeply for their business model, their focus on sustainability, and design interest in folklore. Very good work Gudrun. ♦ My very first: cardigan. Knit cardigan. Machine knitted cardigan.

stashbusting: spring silk

There is something in the wind in the blogworld, and I want to take part! In the past several months I’ve been seeing a lot of posts on stashbusting, which is something I’ve been mulling over for a while as well.  After adding to my fabric stash a while ago I started to feel like I should be using up the fabric that was just lying there. At the same time, I was reading about the stashbusting (or related) projects on cargo cult craft, Mena’s Sew Weekly, and in Zoe’s post on Colette Patterns.

Ok, now with all the links sorted out, what am I going to be doing with my stash? For me right now, participating in something organized feels too constricting in a way, so I’ll be setting very loose rules for myself. The point for me is to use the fabric I already have in the best way possible, so I’ll try to make garments that use up as much as possible of the individual pieces of fabric. I also want to either use patterns I already have, or patterns I draft myself.

In the spirit of the moodboards that are becoming quite the staple, here is what I’m planning:

Sources: pattern image; Simplicity, pink/red dress; anthropologie, and fancy lady in shorts; Wardrobe Remix ca May 2008 (if anyone knows who the owner of the image is, please share, and I will credit appropriately.)

I’ve seen a lot of drapey sleeveless tops around, so with my one yard of blush-colored silk I got in China some six years ago, the plan is to make view B of Simplicity 4589. I’ve had a tendency to only buy a yard of a pretty fabric if I don’t have a project in mind for it, and that severely limits the options down the road! There should be just enough of this fabric for this top though, and to challenge myself, I’m planning to make it reversible. The shine of the silk can be a bit too dressy for an everyday top, so I’m planning to use seam-finishes that are nice on both sides for maximum versatility.

Anyone else feeling the weight of their stash? Planning some stashbusting yourself?
